A TEENAGE footballer from Malton has earned a call-up to the England Under 18s Schoolboys squad.
17-year-old Calum Hudson, who plays for Scarborough Athletic Reserves, secured his place after progressing through a final trial earlier this month.
He could take to the field as early as this weekend, with the Schoolboys taking on Wales in Cardiff today.
Footballing runs in the family for the young centre-back, with dad Chris and grandad John plying their trades with local sides Old Malton, Pickering Town, Harrogate Town and York City Reserves - and even as far away as Larvik Fotball in Norway.
Calum made his first forays into the sport with Brooklyn Under 7s - where he was coached by his dad - before being picked up by York City’s Academy aged 11.
He was released by the Minstermen three years later, after which he joined Scarborough and moved through the age groups, winning their Under 19 Player of the Season in 2022-23.
The youngster broke into the Reserve team last term, again catching the eye as he scooped the Coach’s Player of the Season in his debut campaign.
And continuing his upward trajectory, he made the Seadogs’ first-team squad for the first time during their Vanarama National League North clash with Curzon Ashton last month.
“I’m really happy to make the full squad, especially as there were 16 centre-backs there on the final trial so the competition was tough!” Calum enthused.
“I’m now looking forward to the first match which is in Cardiff on the 29th November vs Wales.
“I’m sure there’ll be more challenges, with highs and lows that lie ahead.
"I am grateful to the club and still focused on trying to develop my career at Scarborough.”
Scarborough Athletic Reserve Team Manager Paul Exley added: “I was really pleased to hear the news.
“It is great to see a player develop through our Youth System and Reserve Team to progress into the England U18 Schoolboys Squad.
“Cal is a great lad, works hard and has the right attitude. With those attributes he will go far.”
