TWO of the newitts.com Beckett League Division One frontrunners came head-to-head on Saturday, with Thornton Dale edging a five-goal thriller at Amotherby & Swinton.
The visitors showed early intent with two attempts from Morgan Elven, and with almost half an hour played, the spritely forward put his side ahead.
Amotherby had a swift reply disallowed for offside, but did find an equaliser just after the hour through Lee Timms.
Their joy though proved to be short-lived, skipper Myles Dale putting Thornton back in front before Elven hit a crucial third goal, with Matthew Lock’s last-minute effort a mere consolation.
Ayton produced a five-star display at home to Rosedale – who had three different players don the keeper’s gloves.
The hosts drew first blood on the quarter-hour through Bradley Marshall, but though pegged back by James King’s fine finish, Rob Bowman soon restored their advantage.
King equalised for Rosedale a second time, however Eric Hall and Bowman fired Ayton into a comfortable lead at the break.
The visitors, who had starting ‘keeper Callum Musgrave leave the field with injury early in the game, then saw both Alistair Wilkinson and Adam Durrant play between the sticks.
Marshall grabbed his second of the afternoon, and Ayton’s fifth, but there was still some positivity for the visitors, King completing his hat-trick to notch his first treble in senior football.
Elsewhere, Kirkdale United and Snainton played out a 2-2 draw.
The hosts took the lead through the prolific Nathan Surgenor on the half-hour but were punished for some slack defending as goals from Leigh Watson and Morgan Hewitt turned the game on its head by the break.
Kirkdale though upped the tempo in the second half and were rewarded with 20 minutes remaining as youngster Harry Bowsher swept the ball home to earn his side a share of the points.
In Division Two, Goldsborough kept the pressure on table-toppers Heslerton with a comfortable 2-0 win at Amotherby & Swinton Reserves.
Both goals came in the opening half as Andrew Hardy and Ryan Roe earned the visitors maximum points.
Danby claimed the derby bragging rights with a dominant 4-0 win over neighbours Lealholm Reserves.
Jack Dowson fired the hosts ahead with a sublime free-kick on the quarter-hour before Harvey Clacherty doubled their lead from the spot after having been upended in the box.
Rhys Mould’s tap-in midway through the second half widened the scoreline further before Josh Grimley rounded things off for Danby with the final kick of the afternoon.
Fishburn Park Academy had a rewarding afternoon as they left Bagby & Balk with a 5-1 victory and all three points.
The visitors flew out of the blocks, with both Aaron Locker and Maxwell Gregorek finding the back of the net inside the opening five minutes.
Reece Windle halved the deficit shortly before half time, but Fishburn pushed on after the break, with goals from Billy Blake and Taylor Humble again opening up a cushion.
Blake rounded off the scoring with Fishburn’s fifth goal late on, but there was still time for goalkeeper Ben Escritt to save a Bagby penalty before the final whistle.
Ryedale leapfrogged opponents Sinnington as their first win of the season moved them off the foot of the table.
Veteran Harry Reed got the ball rolling for Ryedale shortly before half time, with goals from Luke Shepherd and Ben Thompson then adding to Sinners’ woes during the second half.
Away from the League, West Pier edged Heslerton in an 11-goal thriller in the second round of the Gordon Harrison Memorial Trophy.
The visitors scored inside five minutes through Morgan Kendrew, but Pier drew level after a cool finish from Declan Richardson.
However, Heslerton always looked dangerous on the break, and Kendrew completed a first-half hat-trick to hand his side a 3-1 lead.
Pier though responded after the interval and took the lead for the first time, Richardson notching his own hat-trick with penalties either side of Lewis Hunter’s neat free-kick.
17-year-old Jake Allardice brought the scores to four apiece with a sweet finish, but the hosts responded again through Michael Pickering.
Jack Pinder again equalised for Heslerton with a speculative 30-yard effort, however John Grayston broke the visitors’ hearts late on, finding the back of the net from a corner to seal Pier’s progression.
