LAST Wednesday evening produced somewhat of a goal-fest as the new Newitts.com Beckett League season entered its second week.

In Division One, Ayton Athletic hosted newly promoted Goal Sports in a game which saw the ball in the back of the net no fewer than 11 times.

Ayton fired themselves into an early advantage through Zac Hansen and Nicko Dunn, before Josh Bown pulled a goal back for the visitors.

However, the hosts soon regained their two-goal cushion through Dan Marston, and it didn’t take long for Dunn and Josh Wallace to add to that after the break.

A quick-fire Kieran Grzesiowski double threatened a comeback from Goal Sports but home goalkeeper Ben Mason stopped them in their tracks with a fine save from 12 yards before goals from Ethan Pashby, Sam Pickard and Eric Hall sealed an 8-3 victory for Ayton.

Elsewhere in the division, Thornton Dale earned a valuable point at home to Amotherby & Swinton, with Jack South’s last-minute equaliser salvaging a 2-2 draw, whilst doubles from Ryan Rivis and David Thompson saw Wombleton Wanderers begin their campaign with a 4-1 victory at home to Snainton.

Goals were also on the menu in Division Two, with last year’s relegated side Bagby & Balk getting off to a flier after a 6-1 demolition of Sinnington.

Quick out of the blocks, the hosts saw frontman Reece Windle fire his side into an early lead, with Kyle O’Gorman adding a second not long after.

But the game was put out of sight early in the second half, with Windle completing his hat-trick and Ben Rushworth powering home a header.

Substitute Luke Clemmit did pull one back for the visitors late on, but that was little more than a consolation as David Cocks fired in a sixth for the hosts five minutes from time.

Beckett League newcomers Danby FC shared an entertaining 2-2 draw at home to Fishburn Park Academy.

The hosts shot into a two-goal lead through Adam Bainbridge and Ryan Hewison, but Park fought back to claim a point, with Harry Poole and Jacob Steele on target.

Not far down the dale, Lealholm’s home clash with Goldsborough ended with the same four-goal scoreline.

Seven goals were on offer as Heslerton kicked off their season against Slingsby at Sand Lane.

The Blues took an early lead through Morgan Kendrew before Jake Allardice marked his 18th birthday with their second.

Anthony Taylor controversially halved the deficit from the penalty spot, but the hosts turned the screw after the break with Kendrew doubling his tally and Matty Bean marking his debut with a goal.

With victory all but wrapped up, substitute Jack Burnett put the icing on the cake late on with Heslerton’s sixth.

It was an evening to forget for Ryedale as they were thrashed 8-2 at West Pier.

A Declan Richardson hat-trick and Martin Cooper brace led Pier’s haul, with second-half efforts from Ryedale’s Luke Dixon and Alby Fee doing little to make the scoreline more palatable.

Scoring showed no signs of slowing down into the weekend fixtures, with Wombleton and Ayton sharing 10 goals in their Division One clash.

This time though Ayton were on the receiving end of a 7-3 defeat, with Rivis and Thompson continuing their prolific week with a hat-trick and brace respectively.

It was a better afternoon for Snainton, who edged their home clash with Goal Sports 3-2 after a scintillating 10-minute spell that saw Lewis Pickles, Sam Cooper and Neil Fryirs find the back of the net.

Division Two action brought more woe for Sinnington, with visitors Goldsborough running out 3-1 victors after goals from Andy Martin, Phil Spencer and Ben Watson.

Elsewhere, Heslerton made it two from two in a five-goal thriller at Fishburn Park to lead the early standings.

The hosts struck first, but it didn’t take long for Hessie to turn the game on its head, Tom Stockdale crashing home an equaliser before captain Olly Stanton fired them in front.

Fishburn moved back onto level terms from a set-piece but it was the visitors’ day, full-back Josh Wade sealing the points in style with a thunderous strike from 30 yards late on.

Danby suffered their first Beckett League defeat after returning empty handed from their trip to Slingsby.

Nathan Wright and Anthony Taylor did the damage for the hosts, with Ryan Hewison netting Danby’s consolation.

The only other match in the division saw Amotherby & Swinton Reserves thankful for a fast start as they held on to a 3-2 victory at Ryedale.
