STILL playing golf as an octogenarian may not be an unusual concept.
However, playing off single figures at that age certainly is.
That is unless you are Kirkbymoorside Golf Club’s Ian Brown, who is continuing to do just that as he celebrates turning 80 this month.
Ian, known affectionately as “Brownie”, made his first forays into the sport at the ICI Wilton course in 1969. By the end of that year, he was playing off single figures, and has continued to do so ever since.
Joining Kirkbymoorside Golf Club in 1984, he quickly became an integral part of the club’s competitive teams, going on to represent them across the York Scratch League, York Union League, Scarborough & District League and East Riding League.
Such an association with the sport has undoubtedly produced many highlights, including 10 holes in one. Remarkably, that achievement included one from a par 4.
“It’s great being a member at Kirkby,” Ian said of his long-held association with the club. “It is a real test of golf in a wonderful setting.
“There are a great bunch of lads here and the staff are fantastic.”
Kirkbymoorside Golf Club has congratulated Ian on such an achievement, and wish him many more years happy golfing.
