IT’S fair to say that the Velo Club has been a huge hit across Ryedale since its conception, now boasting over 80 members in time for its first anniversary.
An appeal on social media last August seeking cyclists for its sociably-paced group rides had an initial response of a dozen riders, but that’s a number that has swelled over the last 12 months.
The club now offers weekly rides of all disciplines to cyclists of all abilities, has become affiliated to British Cycling, and also has its own custom-made kit.
With members spread across the length and breadth of Ryedale, rides start from different locations across the area each week, from Helmsley to Kirkbymoorside, Pickering and Malton.
The club prides itself on its friendly and supportive ethos, with “no drop” rides ensuring that no rider gets left behind or is made to feel uncomfortable if they are near the back of the group.
Founder Tim Featherstone believes that is the reason that his club has proved so popular, saying: “The club offers something for everyone, from development rides for new or returning cyclists, to sociable group rides, chaingangs and trial evenings.”
