MALTON & NORTON RUFC beat derby rivals Selby 38-20 to notch their fifth win in a row and stay second in Yorkshire One.
The home side were forced to come from behind at The Gannock after Selby fly-half Josh Cruise put three points on the board when the hosts were caught offside at a ruck on half way.
Malton went close from the restart but were deemed to have been held up, only for a massive shove from the five-metre scrum to bring a try for number eight Mark Bradshaw. Full-back Zweli Sodladla converted.
Malton then set up camp in the Selby half and, although the visitors held out for ten minutes, the forwards started a maul and prop forward Rob Featherstone was on hand to get the touch down. Sodladla again converted.
Ten minutes later, Malt were at it again. Selby were marched back 20 metres for dissent, Sodladla took a tap penalty and linked with fly-half Nick Daley, who put centre Josh Heggie away to score under the posts for Sodladla to add the extras.
Malton led 21-3 and Selby could have been swamped. However, the Swans responded well and good defence was needed to keep them out.
Centre Vusumzi Dyantjies was the stand out defender for Malton with some crunching tackles but on the half hour a Selby catch and drive from a lineout produced a try for prop forward Duncan Hardy.
The half ended with both sides reduced to 14 men by yellow cards and Malton leading 21-8.
Malton got their bonus point try within five minutes of the restart. A penalty kick to the corner gave Malton the lineout, Sean Emms took it cleanly and Nick Salisbury touched down in the corner.
Fve minutes later, slick handling in the threequarters for once opened up the home defence and Selby wing Iain Adamson crossed to make it 26-13.
A poor Selby clearance was picked up by wing Sizwe Zondo, who went on a mazy run and quick ball from a ruck ended with Sodladla crossing and converting his own try.
A flurry of yellow cards followed for technical offences and, on 70 minutes, Malton extended the lead when Zondo crossed in the corner.
Selby again came back briefly and replacement prop Joe Romaniw grabbed a consolation try.
A stirring second half comeback was not enough to snatch a victory as York went down 33-32 at Bridlington in Yorkshire One.
The visitors trailed 33-13 at the break after a flurry of points for the hosts in the closing minutes of the first half, but they almost stole victory with a late try.
Fly-half George Davis slotted over an early penalty to give York a 3-0 lead but Brid responded with three converted tries to lead 21-3.
With the first half drawing to a conclusion, York started stringing a number of phases together.
A misdirected clearance by Brid allowed Alex Nixon to counter attack from deep and eventually scrum-half Toby Atkins darted over for York’s first try.
A series of good drives from short range then created a try for Daz Rutherford and York had reduced the gap to eight points.
The final minutes of the first half were possibly the most frustrating as Atkins was sin-binned and Brid scored two additional tries.
York camped in the Brid 22 and on 60 minutes a series of strong drives ultimately led to a second short-range try for Rutherford. The conversion by Davis made it 33-20.
Davis, in his first start at fly-half, began to show his vision and skill, giving York field position from which winger Billy Cakaunitabua buried over from short range.
With Brid tiring late on, Sam Arkle crossed to close the gap to a point, but Davis’ conversion attempt went wide and Brid held out.
