THE Rotary Club of Malton and Norton has thrown its support behind Louby’s Lifeline.

Members organise an annual charity golf day at Malton and Norton golf club, and next year’s event will see proceeds divided between the appeal and Yorkshire Cancer Research.

Louby’s Lifeline, which is being backed by the Gazette & Herald, was set up by Laura Robertson-Tierney, pictured, to help fund research into brain tumours and support others whose lives have been devastated by similar circumstances.

At just 17, Laura, known as Louby, has undergone months of gruelling treatment after being diagnosed with two aggressive tumours.

Each day is still a challenge, but despite that, Louby, who lives in Malton, has set up Louby’s Lifeline to help fund research and support others whose lives have been devastated by similar circumstances.

Her mum, Emma, said they were delighted with the support they had received.

“Lou hasn’t been too good again this week and we are back at Jimmy’s in Leeds for more test results, so knowing people are doing so much to help has been a real boost,” she said.

Rotary treasurer John Howard said they were calling the golf day, which will be held on Tuesday, June 12, ‘The Malton Masters’.

Teams of four – men, ladies and mixed – are invited to take part in the golf day which has a first prize of £200.

There will also be a hole-in-one competition with the opportunity to win a new car. Entry is £140 per team to include green fees and refreshments.

Mr Howard said the Rotary Club was keen to support local charities.

“When members read about Louby’s Lifeline in the Gazette & Herald, they wanted to do something to help,” he added.

“We hope local businesses will support the golf day with sponsorship and raise as much money as possible.”

The current list of sponsors includes Dobsons Civil Engineering Construction Ltd, Laycock Electric Ltd, Energytek (Yorkshire) Ltd, Jan Hakansson Dental Surgeon, Maltech Chartered Structural Engineers, North Yorkshire Building Control Partnership, Stones Fuel Oils Ltd, Handelsbanken, Chancery Coffee House & Wine Bar, Robsons Motor Services Ltd, Peter Illingworth Estate Agents. The bands, which cost £1, are available from tanning salon, The Tube Station, in Commercial Street, Norton, and Goodys salons in Norton and Malton as well as The Academy Hair and Beauty.

Further fundraising events are now being planned which will be featured in the Gazette over the coming weeks.

Gazette reporter Karen Darley will also be doing a sponsored swim with the aim of completing 22 miles – the equivalent of the English Channel – before Christmas.

“Working in newspapers, I have met lots of different people from all walks of life, but Louby’s story is one that will always stay with me,” she said.

“As the mum of two daughters, I am full of admiration for Louby for her bravery and for Emma who hasn’t left her daughter’s side since the start of this ordeal.”
