PICKERING Town progressed into the third round of the FA Vase for only the second time in their history last Saturday as they comfortably beat Woodley Sports 3-0.
And they were further boosted by the news they had received a home draw in the next round against Stewart and Lloyds of the United Counties League. If the Pikes were to win the game on December 8, it would be the furthest they have ever progressed in the competition.
After a bad display against lowly Liversedge the week before, manager Jimmy Reid made it clear to his players that a similar performance would not be tolerated against the side from the North West Counties League.
And Reid was pleased with the way his players responded. He said: "It was a big improvement. The players responded not because of me but because of their personal pride."
The Pikes started well with Gavin Dickinson going close after five minutes. Stephan Zoll also went close soon after, after linking up well with Gary Chapman.
Adam Mitchell saved well from Jason Keen after 20 minutes before the Pikes took a firm grip on the game. Gary Chapman was unlucky not to score after Matthew Morton set him up, his 25-yard shot being superbly saved by the keeper Steve Morris.
The Pikes took the lead after 35 minutes. Zoll forced a corner after beating four players, from which Alex Willgrass found Phil O'Reilly, who rose above everyone to powerfully head home. It was a deserved lead but the home side should have equalised when Danny Hooper shot over from close range with the goal at his mercy.
The second half was dominated by the Pikes. Zoll and MacAuley had chances before the all-important second goal. It came from a penalty by Wilgrass after Gavin Dickinson, who Jimmy Reid thought had his best game in a Pickering shirt, was brought down by Andy Watson.
The Pikes were now full of confidence as Joe Connor ran 50 yards, before releasing Zoll but his effort was blocked. Their third goal was scored after 72 minutes. Following good link up play from Morton and Tom Reid, Dickinson fed Zoll who beat two men and scored with a powerful shot.
This was a much better show from the Pikes, which sent the coach-load of loyal supporters home happy. Reid was full of praise for those who made the trip. He said: "At least 35 came on the coach and for a wee club like ours the support is brilliant."
On Saturday, the Pikes visit Buxton in the League Cup. Seats are available on the coach. Next Wednesday, Town are at home to Marske United in the North Riding CFA Senior Cup.
