A MALTON charity closes at the weekend after its elderly committee all resigned saying it was time for younger blood.
The Arthritis Research Campaign has been running in the area for 20 years. But with members averaging 70 or 80 years of age, the committee decided enough was enough.
"We are all a bit sad about it," said Jeffrey Farlam, who is the branch treasurer. "The trouble is there are so many good causes nowadays. People are getting very reluctant to give to charity. We thought we would go en bloc. We need new blood in the organisation."
What Mr Farlam hopes for is that new, younger people come forward with fresh ideas to appeal to a younger audience. "We would like people who would be willing to devote some of their time, people with a sense of social responsibility who can raise money for a good cause." He added: "I would be willing to stay on as treasurer."
Whatever happens, Mr Farlam is remaining on active service to see through the campaign's famous general knowledge quiz. That will finish next year. The last event organised by the committee is held tomorrow, Friday, at the Memorial Hall, Old Malton. It is a bingo and starts at 7.30pm.
"This little organisation has done wonders in the past, now age has caught up with us," he said sadly. "It would be wonderful if we could rise again like the Phoenix from the ashes."
