BEN Woodhouse is clearly making significant strides in his new role as pupil-assistant to Nicky Henderson, one of Britain's leading trainers.
Henderson sent out his 49th winner of the season at Doncaster last Saturday and, having opted not to make the journey north from Lambourn, it was young Woodhouse - son of Ryedale trainer, Bob - who filled the breach as stable representative.
"I am delighted because it's the first winner I've saddled up for the guvnor," said Ben after Tysou had gained the day under top-weight.
Fittingly, for somebody with a strong local connection, the victory came in a race named in honour of the late, great Sea Pigeon and it was a proud Woodhouse, who stepped forward to receive the winning trophy.
"Things are going well and I am really enjoying the job," said Ben, who shares a house near the famous Seven Barrows yard with another ex-pat from the Malton area. Andrew Tinkler, son of Colin and Carol, followed the route taken during the summer by Woodhouse and is now attached to Henderson's Berkshire yard as amateur rider.
Looking forward to next year, incidentally, Woodhouse will get the chance of gaining additional valuable experience even farther from home. Victory in a nationwide competition for assistant-trainers opens the door for Ben to enjoy a working holiday in a top yard abroad. Final arrangement have yet to be made, but France or America currently beckon.
