RESIDENTS in Malton and Norton are gearing up for a two-week long celebration to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

And traders are hoping to cash in on events which organisers hope will attract thousands of visitors to the town.

A committee has been established to ensure all events in the twin towns are co-ordinated jointly.

Patricia Hands, who is helping to organise events, said central to celebrations will be a massive street party on Jubilee Day, Monday June 3.

"That will be taking place in Malton Market Place where there will be food, entertainment and things for children to enjoy," said Mrs Hands, who runs Norton Post Office with her husband James.

"There will also be a parade through the towns which we're hoping traders and residents will get involved with."

Celebrations are set to start early with a number of events being held to raise money for the big day.

"We've got a carnival queen and prince competition on May 17 with a disco at the Milton Rooms," said Mrs Hands.

"At some point there will also be a plastic duck race and a 1950s night at the Bowling Club."

Derek Allen, who runs Ego, a fashion shop in Yorkersgate, Malton, is helping to organise celebrations.

"I am trying to get as many retailers on board as possible because we need their help," he explained.

"They will benefit a great deal from the trade which is generated by the Jubilee so it is vital they get involved, not necessarily making a financial contribution.

"I will be calling a meeting of retailers soon which will be a way of exchanging ideas."

Town centre manager Mick Gains, who is helping to co-ordinate events, said the celebrations would help generate a positive buzz around the towns.

"With the onset of spring the imminent re opening of the livestock market, flood defences well underway and the successes of Christmas and the recent business awards under our belt, the stage is set for a new era of regeneration and growth in Malton and Norton," he said.

"This is being underpinned by a community spirit which has been revitalised and encouraged by these recent successes."
