ENGLISH Heritage is welcoming walkers back to post-foot and mouth North Yorkshire with a new guide.

Heritage Hikes describes six treks around the region's spectacular historic landscape. The walks take in woodland, fields, moors, clifftops and rivers.

The routes centre on English Heritage sites including the 12th century Rievaulx Abbey and the deserted medieval village of Wharram Percy, near Malton. Other attractions mentioned in the guide are Whitby Abbey, Byland Abbey, near Thirsk, Mount Grace Priory, near Northallerton and Middleham Castle, Richard III's old stomping ground.

David Fraser, English Heritage regional director, said: "People don't have to travel abroad to enjoy fantastic scenery and memorable historic sites. It's important to remember how much beauty and interest we have on our own doorstep in Yorkshire."

Each set of circular walks is on a waterproof, laminated pocket-size card. The routes, between six and eight miles have been independently tested. And they are designed to appeal to both experienced and novice adult walkers. The cards also give information on parking and public transport. Walking boots and weather-proof clothing are recommended for all the walks.

Copies of the guide priced £5.95 can be purchased by telephoning (01761) 452966. Anyone who buys the book before June 30 will receive two for one entry to any of the featured sites.
