THIS week sees the relaunch of a book first published in 1841, the Theakston's Guide to Scarborough.
The book was meant for visitors to Scarborough and the neighbourhood, which was enjoying a tourist boom at the time, and offers a unique insight into the history of the town and its inhabitants. The book is also of importance as it contains 38 engravings by the artist HB Carter showing what Scarborough looked like 160 years ago.
The copy of the book reproduced is unique in that it was presented by Theakston to William Bean of Scarborough, the eminent Victorian naturalist, and the inscriptions written at the time are also reproduced, as are the misspellings of Theakston's name on the cover.
The project was supervised by Professor Gordon Bell, of Pickering, who has written a new introduction to the book, which deals with the work of HB Carter. Prof Bell will be signing copies of the book at Waterstone's in Scarborough on Saturday, July 27, from 2pm.
