PEOPLE who love the North York Moors have only a few days left to apply to join a new panel which will help shape the future of the national park.

The Moors Local Access Forum, which will be established later this year, will aim to improve public access to the park, and will have a say on everything from rights of way to land closures.

Its parent body, the North York Moors National Park Authority, wants the panel to include walkers, cyclists, motorcyclists, landowners, businesses and tourism groups. But interested parties only have until Friday to make themselves known.

Karl Gerhardson, recreation and access officer, said: "We have had a good response to this call so far, but looking through the applications, there conspicuously haven't been many from the tourism industry.

"Obviously, we would be very keen for tourism businesses to get involved and have a voice on the forum, and from anyone who hasn't heard about it."

The authority has had a successful forum group for six years, consisting of members of interest groups and organisations. But under new legislation, it must now recruit a new forum based entirely on merit, without reserved places for specific bodies.

Mr Gerhardson said: "The forum will be involved with changes to the national park at a very detailed level.

"On one level, it will be a matter of them saying whether they feel there is enough access in general, but they will also be able to comment on the use of each individual parcel of land."

Richard Gunton, head of support services, said: "The primary purpose of the forum is to provide an opportunity for users and landowners to advise the authority on the improvement of public access for enjoyment.

"The advice given by the forum will be of particular local importance and interest."

The forum will meet at least twice a year, and possibly as many as eight times a year for the near future.

Mr Gerhardson said it would enjoy "great autonomy", adding: "The members will be able to decide how and when they want to meet, and what they want to say. And they will be listened to."

The application deadline is midday on Friday. To express an interest, ring Richard Gunton on 01439 770657, or email rgunton@northyorkmoors-npa.gov.uk
