WARNINGS that the famous 199 Church Stairs at Whitby could close following more vandalism have been made by the rector and churchwardens.
Bids are being made to carry out a restoration of the steps, which are a Grade 1 listed monument and link the harbourside with the ancient abbey and parish church of St Mary's, but the work could cost as much as £120,000.
Twenty-four feet of railings have been damaged and pulled away from the stanchions by vandals.
The Rev David Smith said: "This is the latest in a series of mindless, petty incidents of damage to the stairs.
"We appeal to the people of Whitby for their help in preventing vandalism. If it continues, with its consequent expense, the restoration will continue to be delayed and we will be left with no alternative but to close the stairs to the public."
