A BADGER culling programme has been suspended, DEFRA reports. As part of research into possible links between the animals at bovine TB, there had been a "reactive" cull of badgers close to cattle TB outbreaks.
That portion of the research has now been discontinued because it was found that there was a 27pc increase in the number of cases of bovine TB occurring in reactive culling areas, compared to the areas where no culling took place. The trial had been set up in 1998 to establish whether the culling of badgers would be effective in controlling bovine TB.
