Scarborough and District FA Junior Cup. THERE was no glory this time for cup holders Pickering Royal Oak or last season's runners-up Edgehill reserves, as both sides went out in the first round last Saturday.

Oak were thrashed 5-1 at home to Cayton Corinthians reserves, who gained revenge for last season's semi-final defeat. Oak were unlucky not to take the lead through Ben Thompson and Nick Wilkinson. Cayton took the lead with an own goal but Oak quickly equalised through Thompson. Cayton took control in the second half but didn't regain the lead until 15 minutes from time when their superior fitness told. Ronnie Lamb, Lee Barber, Martin Cooper and Dean Andrews were all on target for the visitors. Matt Pedder was Oak's man of the match.

Edgehill reserves crashed out 2-1 at Snainton, who took a first-half lead through Richard Swiers, following good work by Ryan Cooper. Edgehill levelled through Lee Major early in the second half but Snainton's Liam Cooper got the winner from the spot with 20 minutes to go.

Kirkdale United earned a hard-fought 3-1 victory at home to Whitby Fishermen. Kirkdale's young keeper James Thompson made a couple of outstanding saves in the first half. Andy Collier chipped the home side into an early second-half lead. A solo effort from Chris Simpson increased the lead before Fishermen pulled a goal back from a free-kick. Simpson's second restored his side's two-goal advantage.

Thornton-le-Dale beat ten-man Sleights 1-0, thanks to a goal from Dale's man of the match Will Dunnett after good work by Tony Wootton. Craig Barnes and Geoff Quilter had impressive games in defence for Dale. Slingsby were thrashed 7-0 at home by Lealholm, who were 5-0 up by half-time.

Ryedale Sports Club reserves were beaten 3-1 at home by Kirkbymoorside reserves, with the score-line flattering the Moorsiders a little. David Gardiner headed the Moorsiders into a first-half lead. Kirkby keeper Darren Collier made a great save to prevent James Reed from scoring. But ten minutes into the second half, Ryedale were level when John Sherwood broke down the right wing and crossed for Sean Dixon to smash home. The Moorsiders went on to win with late goals from Gardiner and sub Andrew Wilkinson.

Aislaby United lost at home to Black Swan, Pickering on penalties after extra-time ended 1-1. In normal time, Swan's Simon Dale opened the scoring after 56 minutes before Aislaby equalised ten minutes later through sub Simon Rough.

Swan won 3-0 on penalties as Adrian Voicu, Simon Dale and John Peel scored from the spot. Swan keeper Dave Sturgess was the hero, saving twice from Martin Carter (after his first had to be retaken) and from Pete McGrath. Simon Abbot also missed for Aislaby. Man of the match winners were Kenny Temple (Aislaby) and Dave Sturgess (Swan).

Seamer had a great 2-1 win at Burniston, thanks to a goal from Mark Tyson and a Dave Gaddass own goal. Jeff Sygrove pulled a goal back for Burniston in the second half. Rillington lost 1-0 at Newcastle Packet.

FC Rosette and Whitby Albion Rangers are the two favourites left in the competition. FC Rosette beat Heslerton 5-0, with Paul Scott grabbing a brace, while Rangers thrashed Scalby reserves 9-0, Chris Taylor bagging four.
