THE world's first wood-fuelled power station near Selby has been given a new lease of life.

The £40m revolutionary plant went into liquidation last August before being bought earlier this year by US-based Bio-development International (BDI).

There were fears the new owners might dismantle the plant and take the technology and equipment to another country.

But bosses at DAS Energy UK Ltd - a subsidiary of BDI - told Selby councillors that they plan to generate electricity at the Eggborough site, using environmentally-friendly biomass.

Renewable energy expert Gopal Rao, an adviser to DAS said: "We plan to bring it back to life by using 20pc willow coppice and 80pc forest residue.

"We are permitted to use forest residue to meet our requirements but we will use a greater percentage of willow coppice if the farmers can grow more."
