YEAR six pupils from Pickering Community Junior School have produced a ceramic mural, depicting an illustrated map of the world, to mark them winning the International School Award earlier this year.

The mural was officially unveiled today by Nadine Blacklee, a volunteer at the school. It was made with the help of potter Sally Tozer, from Pickering.

The school won the award, from the British Council, for developing strong links with schools abroad, including ones in Finland, Bangkok, Bulgaria, Denmark, Italy and Brazil.

It is the second time since 1997 that the Pickering school, one of 95 schools in the country to be accredited this year, has earned the accolade.

Meanwhile, a group of year six pupils from the school have won certificates after performing well in the nationally-run Primary Maths Challenge. Over half the 32 pupils won gold, silver or bronze certificates, with year six pupils, Laurie Saffin, Edward Atkinson and Sarah Mitchell, picking up gold ones. A number of the pupils are now waiting to see if they have made it through to the next round.
