Selby

The dedication and unrelenting support shown throughout the year by farmers to Selby Auction Market was highlighted at the Annual Christmas Fatstock Show when an outstanding show of cattle presented judges Mr S Hibberd of Doncaster and Mr R Haigh of Mirfield with a mammoth task. The championship was won by a Belgium Blue steer presented by R J Wilkinson, of Gainsborough, which sold for £1,276 to Mr S Hibberd on behalf of J F Pitchard, of Southwell. An overall show of 326 cattle met a very firm trade, generated by 15 buyers who attend the market on a regular basis. The high quality of sheep provided an equally daunting task to judge Mr A Cook, of M&C Meats, of Crossgates. A pen of texel lambs shown by Mr J North, of Fenwick, near Doncaster, won the overall championship and FABBL award, selling at £81 to Knavesmire Butchers, of York. 655 sheep realised an overall average of 116.42p per kilo.

Thirsk

The largest entry of prime cattle at Thirsk market since 1997 and the largest entry of prime cattle at any market in the UK since reopening after foot and mouth was the highlight of the Christmas Prime Stock show on December 4. 607 cattle demonstrated the increasing return to the live ring for cattle producers and butchers, and the confidence of the directors of Thirsk Mart to invest £2.5m in new premises on the edge of the town, subject to obtaining planning consent from the local authority in two weeks' time. The quality of sheep and pigs in other sections of the show demonstrate the ability of the farmers in the area to produce the very best of British stock. Eighteen cattle buyers from across the North of England and the Midlands saw the champion heifer, judged by John Woodhead of Woodhead Brothers (who are suppliers to Morrisons) and presented by S Newcombe and Sons of Carthorpe, sell at £3 per kilo or £1,875 to Peter Buck, of Hutchinson Butchers at Ripley, near Harrogate.
