Helmsley Walled Garden has been awarded The King’s Award for Voluntary Service.

The award is the highest a local voluntary group can receive in the UK and is equivalent to an MBE.

June Tainsh, Executive Director, said nurturing people and plants are key values at the heart of the community which thrives within the captivating garden.

It is a testament to the work that each and every one of you do in keeping the garden so beautiful and welcoming our visitors so warmly. It is also much more than that – a recognition of the companionship, support and genuine kindness that you all show each other. The team work we see and the joy that you all bring on a daily basis to the staff that work with you to keep our garden growing.

"Over 100 volunteers benefit from the therapeutic horticulture this independent charity offers in abundance. Their volunteers gain from time spent in nature, while learning new skills, and enjoying a peaceful sanctuary. There is a distinct sense of achievement and ownership of the activities undertaken here, all while enhancing a sense of belonging and social inclusivity. The hard work and dedication displayed here could not be more deserving of this highly respected accolade.

Helmsley Walled Garden is one of 281 local charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups to receive the prestigious award this year. Their work, along with others from across the UK, reminds us of all the ways volunteers are contributing to their local communities.

The King’s Award for Voluntary Service aims to recognise outstanding work by local volunteer groups and organisations. It was created in 2002 to celebrate Her Majesty the Late Queen’s Golden Jubilee and, was continued following the accession of His Majesty the King. 2024 marks the second year of The King’s Award for Voluntary Service. Recipients are announced annually on November 14, The King’s Birthday.
