SIX people were arrested after a burglary ended up in a police chase in the early hours of this morning.

North Yorkshire Police have shared the story of a police chase, which took place in the early hours of this morning, and led to the arrests of a group of six people. 

According to a spokesperson, the force received reports of a group breaking through gates at business premises near Barton-Le-Willows at 0.40am today (November 24).

After roads policing officers set off on the A64, they caught sight of a vehicle, believed to be part of the operation, which was travelling alongside a car.

The team’s sergeant then coordinated with the control room to bring together various resources, including a dog unit, to stop the vehicles. After attempting to do this near Askham Bryan, a police chase began on foot as the two people in HGV jumped out whilst the vehicle was still moving.

According to a police spokesperson: “Our police dog Rhun who worked with his handler for over an hour to track scent and follow footprints across various muddy fields and woodland for approximately 7km.

“Rhun, who doesn’t give up easily, rumbled again as he found two men hiding in a haystack. The men matched the description of the runners from the HGV.”

The four people inside the car were arrested whilst this took place.

After the HGV came to a safe stop, thankfully without being damaged, police were able to recover over £50,000 of gin. Shortly after this occurred, a gin distillery in Barton-Le-Willows contacted the police to report a break in via the roof.

Six people from the West Yorkshire area - two aged in their 20s, three aged in their 30s, and one in his 50s - were arrested on suspicion of burglary and are currently in police custody.
