POLICE are urging people not to travel unless it's essential as Storm Bert hits North Yorkshire.
A number of roads are currently impassable due to snow, while strong winds and raid are affecting other areas.
A police spokesperson said: "Our colleagues at the Ministry of Defence Police are currently dealing with vehicles stuck in the snow at the top of Blue Bank, just outside Sleights and Saltersgate Bank. (A169) The road is currently impassable.
"Please do not attempt a journey unless it's essential.
If you have to travel, give yourself ample time and pack a shovel, warm flask, winter coat and boots.
Most people have experience of driving in snow. But because we don't have to do it often in this country, skills and knowledge can get rusty.
So here's what the Highway Code says...
Before setting off...
• you must be able to see, so clear all snow and ice from all your windows
• you must ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible
• make sure the mirrors are clear and the windows are demisted thoroughly
• remove all snow that might fall off into the path of other road users
• check your planned route is clear of delays and that no further snowfalls or severe weather are predicted.
When it comes to driving, remember to...
• drive at a slow speed in as high a gear as possible; accelerate and brake very gently
• drive particularly slowly on bends where loss of control is more likely. Brake progressively on the straight before you reach a bend. Having slowed down, steer smoothly round the bend, avoiding sudden actions
• check your grip on the road surface when there is snow or ice by choosing a safe place to brake gently. If the steering feels unresponsive this may indicate ice and your vehicle losing its grip on the road. When travelling on ice, tyres make virtually no noise.
It's also a good idea to keep an eye on the forecast for changing conditions if you absolutely need to make a journey.
Above all, stay safe e
