Motorists are being urged to delay their journeys on coastal routes this morning (Wednesday) due to heavy snow and ice.

The A169 Sleights to Whitby and A171 at Fylingdales are currently impassable.

A police spokesperson said: "There is also lots of congestion and motorists are urged to avoid the area at this time and delay their journey until conditions have improved.

The MET office has said today will be feel bitter with sunshine and periods of brisk north-westerly winds.

"Wintry showers for coastal areas likely through the morning. Mostly fine in afternoon and evening. Maximum temperature 3 °C.

Tonight: A very cold night with a severe overnight frost developing, particularly in rural areas. Winds decreasing mostly light but brisker near the coast. Minimum temperature -7 °C.

Thursday: Another cold day with a chance of snow showers returning to the Pennines for a time on Thursday. A slow thaw during daylight hours but icy stretches persisting in places. Maximum temperature 3 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday: Friday cold with wintry showers near coasts. Further snow on Saturday with rain by evening. Very windy. Sunday milder and brighter with rain clearing and remaining windy.
