An East Riding of Yorkshire charity has received a major accolade with royal approval in recognition of its voluntary service efforts.

Pocklington Rugby in the Community (PRITC) announced today (November 14) that it has received the King’s Award for Voluntary Service for its dedication to strengthening Pocklington and surrounding areas through activities to promote health, wellness and community spirit.

Awarded for life, the King's Award for Voluntary Service is the highest accolade for volunteer groups across the nation, equivalent to an MBE.

PRITC’s chair Andy Bowden said: “The King's Award honours the selfless dedication of PRITC volunteers who consistently go above and beyond in offering their invaluable support.

“Far more than event helpers, PRITC’s volunteers are the backbone of its mission, building relationships that support the very foundation of the community.

“Through our innovative, community-driven approach, PRITC brings people together in an inclusive environment where members learn new skills, form friendships, and build confidence.

“This commitment has sparked significant growth in community involvement, promoting a more connected, welcoming, and supportive Pocklington.

“Over the last three years I’m proud to say we’ve interacted with over 80 local groups and charities to support volunteering within the community and look forward to working with many more over the years to come!”

A spokesperson for the charity said it is known for impactful initiatives like the Friday Social, a monthly event that encourages anyone feeling lonely or isolated to meet for a cuppa, cake and a chat, or the hosting of inclusive sporting activities that help adults with learning disabilities to stay active whilst having fun.

Representatives of PRITC and its team of over 75 volunteers will receive the award crystal and certificate from Jim Dick, Lord-Lieutenant of East Riding of Yorkshire later this summer.

Two volunteers from the charity will then attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May and June 2025, along with other recipients of this year’s award.

Pocklington Rugby in the Community said it will host a special event in the new year, inviting community members, volunteers, and local leaders to join in the festivities, learn more about the charity’s mission, and hear about upcoming initiatives.

The King’s Award for Voluntary Service was created in 2002 to celebrate Her Majesty the late Queen’s Golden Jubilee and was continued following the accession of His Majesty the King.

2024 marks the second year of the King’s Award for Voluntary Service.
