York's newest pub has opened in one of the city's most iconic streets.

As The Press previously reported, the long-awaited opening of the King's Inn in Shambles has arrived. Owner and founder Steph Blair - also the founder of LICC in Back Swinegate - is joined by her partner in the running of this monarchy inspired pub.

In the site formerly home to Ristorante Barri, renovations inside the King's Inn have extended the space, and packed the walls with both British and Regal decorations.

The pub is named the King's Inn due to its long association with King Charles III, who visited the site as the Prince of Wales when it was a different pub.

Speaking in the new pub, owner Steph said: "We got here one day and thought 'lets just quietly open the doors' and people started coming in.

"Its been mental so far, we obviously had targets we wanted to meet but we've just surpassed them.

"We've had so many compliments on the interior design - people are loving it. The response has just been amazing."

The pub opened shortly after City of York Council approved its licence to serve alcohol.

"We are able to stay open until one in the morning, and once in the month we can pick a night to stay open until three on the weekend, if we were to hold an event," Steph said.

"We're looking to bring in live music. At the minute, I'm trying to work out the best day for a quiz night as well."

She added that the most popular cocktail among customers so far has been their bespoke Paddington cocktail, served with a marmalade sandwich.

"The amount of locals showing support has just been great. Everyone has been so nice," Steph said.

"Obviously the King's Inn is a little play on words because the King has been here when it was a pub before.

"Its about being proud to be British, me and my partner love the Royal Family."

The team at the King's Inn has expanded to 20 new members of staff, combining both front-of-house and kitchen employees.

Steph added: "To go from the state that it was in to do such a big refurb was terrifying, but it's exciting to open something that we're proud of and that people seem to really like.

"To have somewhere here on York's most iconic street - we're really proud of it."
