A semi-finalist on television's The Voice made an inspiring visit to Malton School.

Rachel Modest, a singer, songwriter, musical director and performer, who appeared on the ITV talent programme in 2022, was invited to the school as part of a programme of speakers planned throughout the year to provide inspiration, motivation and occasionally challenge students.

The first of these took place at the end of Year 12 students’ first day in Sixth Form when Rachel was invited to speak.

Rachel performed three songs for students – two of which she wrote herself - and spoke of the many hurdles she had to overcome in order to succeed, including racism.

A spokesperson for Malton School said Rachel had explained to the youngsters that in some ways music was a refuge for Rachel, who as a teenager would practice piano for up to six hours a day.

"As she explained to students there is no judgement in music practice rooms – you are assessed purely on your talent and ability, of which she had a huge amount.

"Equally, as someone who has worked a number of different jobs, both in education, and the music industry, and has changed careers, Rachel encouraged students to take a long-term perspective on their own future. Research from America suggests that Gen Z-ers are likely to have as many as 18 jobs over up to six different careers throughout their working life."

Rachel was brought up singing Gospel music and playing piano. Uncertain where her music would take her, having studied at Bretton Hall she went on to become a teacher, Head of Music and SENCo before deciding to leave education to focus on her solo career.

Born and brought up in Sheffield, Rachel continues to live in Yorkshire although travels all over the UK and further afield.

She is perhaps best known for having reached the semi-final of The Voice, where she was part of Tom Jones’ team. Although her personal highlight was being asked to sing at the Global Teacher Prize 2023 in Paris, organised in conjunction with UNESCO, where she was introduced on stage by Nile Rodgers.

The spokesperson added: "It was a challenging and thought-provoking discussion for the students, who will begin to explore their own next steps over coming weeks and months and consider their post 18 options with the Sixth Form staff team and tutors. But Rachel is living proof that determination, courage, resilience and a willingness to embrace change can lead to an incredibly fulfilling future."
