Slingsby Duck Race had a record-breaking day raising £5,000 for the village school.

Held on Slingsby Sports Field, the 33rd annual event including stalls, games, musical entertainment and a barbecue courtesy of The Star Inn's Andrew Pern.

A spokesperson for the Friends of the School, who organised the event, said: "We couldn’t have hoped for a better day for this year's Slingsby Duck Race and Family Fun Day which was held at the Slingsby Sports Field on Saturday, July 6.

"The rain stayed away, the sun shone and most importantly, Friends of Slingsby School raised a record breaking £5,000 for their village school. Our heartfelt thank you to everyone who sponsored ducks, bought raffle tickets, and visited us on the day.

"The barbecue, which was provided by and cooked by local award-winning Michelin Starred chef Andrew Pern, who also generously donated all the money raised from catering, was in full swing by 11am, music was on hand via the fabulous local Fine Companion Folk Band and visits from the local fire brigade, police car and local tractor enthusiast Mr Dixon, added to the fanfare for the day.

"But let’s not forget the reason why everyone was here - the duck race itself - which saw families make their way down to the beck, and with commentating provided by Slingsby school’s Head Teacher, Mr Smith, the ducks were released at 2pm.

"Being ushered along by the trusted ‘stream team’ of Andrew, Wendy and Pip, the winning duck was no 71, which was sponsored by Lily who won the £50 prize. And let’s not forget that there was also a prize for last place, which was awarded to the Saggers family.

"A wonderful day to celebrate the community spirit and fantastic school that we have. We hope to see you all again next year for our 34th Duck Race."
