A bookseller at Kemps in Malton has won a prestigious Northern Writers Award 2024
Cindy Withjack, a member of Kemps Bookseller team from Malton has won the 25th Northern Writers Award for Fiction for her currently unpublished novel. The recent award ceremony held at Northumbria University celebrated England’s largest and longest-running writer development programme, worth £50,000, shared between winners in a variety of categories.
Cindy is a proudly neurodiverse PhD researcher studying English Literature and Creative Writing at the University of York. Alongside working at Kemps and writing her novel, her research focuses on sincerity and trauma writing in millennial art and literature.
Liz Kemp, proprietor of Kemps in Malton, commented, “We are immensely proud of Cindy’s success. She is a wonderful asset to our team and approaches her work with us with enormous creativity, as well as simply being a great team player.”
The award, produced by New Writing North and supported by sponsor Northumbria University, Arts Council England, and a range of partners aims to provide a platform for new writers and act as a catalyst for writers intent on a career in writing in the North of England.
