A total of 13 volunteers from Helmsley Litter Picking group (HeLP) took part in this years Keep Britain Tidy ‘Great British Spring Clean campaign which took place last month.
This is the second year when HeLP pledged to pick a number of bags towards the National campaign. A total of 420,500 bags had been pledged to be picked by groups and individuals around the UK this year.
Peter Elliott, who coordinates the groups activities, said: "Whilst Helmsley’s pledge was somewhat modest, they comfortably exceeded their original pledge collecting a total of 32 bags. The group concentrated their efforts on the A170 out of Helmsley up to the Wass/Coxwold junction. The road to Harome from Helmsley and the B 1257 out of Helmsley towards Bilsdale and also towards Malton were also targeted.
"The group is grateful for the support of North Yorkshire Council who assist with the supply of bags, pickers, signage and bag collection. Helmsley Town Council have supported the group with hi viz waistcoats.
Since being formed in 2019 until the end of 2023 the group have picked a total of 620 bags of rubbish from the town and roads within a five mile radius of Helmsley.
Peter added: "It is a continuing struggle to not let litter overcome and spoil the beautiful countryside we have around us."
If neighbouring villages or towns wanted to link up with the group to help reduce litter in Ryedale generally, or if you like to volunteer with HeLP, please contact helmsleygreenteam@gmail.com
