In answer to David Hoggard (31 January), I would like to set the record straight in my capacity as a recently new elected Malton town councillor and on the council’s actual voting. No members of the public were present at this meeting.

I am passionate about keeping speeding traffic to a minimum in our town, just one of the reasons why I stood to be a Malton councillor and got democratically elected.

In 2022 the council voted five to three to support the ‘20s plenty’ campaign. In 2023 the council voted eight to one to support all 30mph limit areas becoming 20mph. However, councillors asked for a public consultation to be carried out prior to moving forward.

In 2023 a public consultation was carried out - 99 people responded, 77 of those responses supported 20mpnh becoming the normal speed in Malton and Old Malton.

In 2023 the chair used his casting vote, which he is quite entitled to do regarding speed issues.

Finally, I noticed that in 2015 Mr Hoggard stood as a Conservative candidate for Ryedale District Council, and was not elected. In my opinion all elected councillors try to do their best and may not agree on everything. Malton Town council welcome residents at every meeting to have their say, so we can all work together to make a difference.
