The next couple of months are packed with top class events at the Milton Rooms in Malton – from don’t-miss music and mirth to magic and memories.
Most definitely in the memories category are TV and radio legend Bob Harris and Colin Hall discussing ‘The Songs The Beatles Gave Away’ on October 6’ followed the next day by Marblehead Johnson recreating the heady sounds of the Britpop era with hits from many of the bands, including Blur and Oasis.
On October 22 Giles Shenton Productions ask the question ‘What’s Wrong with Benny Hill?’, a musical comedy about the former top comedian who has now been effectively ‘’cancelled’’ in Britain.
Mandy Muden, who has reached the semi-final of the America’s Got Talent TV show, presents her brand of magic and comedy on November 3 before the music takes centre stage again with The Belgrave House Band’s Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders from Mars on November 10 and a day later Gary Stewart and band recreating Paul Simon’s Graceland album.

Two fundraising events to mention which are taking place at the Milton Rooms. On Thursday, October 5, St Catherine’s Hospice is holding a coffee morning from 10am to 1pm and on Saturday, October 14, Ryedale Dog Rescue present the Jackhare Ceilidh Band from 7.30pm to 11pm (tickets £10, book by emailing fundraising@ryedaledogrescue.org.uk).

Friday, October 6: Bob Harris and Colin Hall – The Songs The Beatles Gave Away. BBC legend Bob Harris and author/music journalist Colin Hall host an intimate evening based around their mutual love and appreciation of The Beatles. In particular, they tell how Lennon, McCartney and, to a lesser extent, Harrison gifted their tunes to others. This is the story behind those songs, the hits, the misses and the demos that the group never released. 8pm. Tickets £20.
Saturday, October 7: The Original Britpop Experience – Marblehead Johnson. Named after the classic Bluetones Britpop anthem, Marblehead Johnson pay tribute to the British Britpop music scene, playing songs from Blur, The Bluetones, Paul Weller, The Verve, Ocean Colour Scene, Supergrass, Pulp and Oasis. 8pm. Tickets: £15.
Sunday, October 8: An Afternoon with Charles Hanson. One of the UK’s best known auctioneers, Charles’s charismatic personality coupled with his stories from the sales room and his antics on TV’s Bargain Hunt, Flog It and Antiques Road Trip has the audience in stitches. Charles will be talking about his career, valuing audience items and auctioning some great tickets. 3pm. Tickets £10 – hurry, not many left.
Sunday, October 15: The Vintage Vocalist. Join Paula Marie, The Vintage Vocalist, as she goes on a sentimental journey back to the golden age of song. She brings the music of the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s to life, performing golden hits from the likes of Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, Vera Lynn, Billie Holiday, The Andrews Sisters, Connie Francis, Brenda Lee, Bobby Darin, Petula Clark, Helen Shapiro, Elvis Presley, The Carpenters and ABBA. 3pm. Tickets £10.
Saturday, October 21: Eclipse Dance - Chris & Joanne Powell, Concert and Dance Organists. Ballroom, Latin American and Sequence Dancing. Chris Powell has firmly established himself as one of the UK’s premier entertainment organists and Joanne has been a full-time professional organist for more than 25 years. Sunday, October 22: Giles Shenton Productions presents What’s Wrong with Benny Hill? Benny Hill died alone in his spartan flat in 1992, He was 68. Yet when Apollo Eleven landed on the moon in 1969, millions watched live on TV but that evening many more tuned in to The Benny Hill Show. Today, The Benny Hill Show is broadcast regularly in over 100 countries around the world. But in Britain, he has effectively been “cancelled”. What’s Wrong with Benny Hill? is a brand-new musical comedy that explores the life and legacy of a very peculiar and brilliant comedian. 3pm. Tickets £12.50.
Thursday, October 26: Ryedale Blues Club features Jed Potts & The Hillman Hunters. One of the best blues bands on the Edinburgh scene, they play classic 1950s and early 1960s American blues, delivered with passion and power, inspired by American greats from Freddie King to Howlin’ Wolf. 8pm. Tickets £10.

Friday, November 3: Many Muden – An Evening of Magic and Comedy. Mandy Muden returns to The Milton Rooms with her hilarious comedy magic show. Her sensational appearances on Britain’s Got Talent and the 2022 Britain’s Got Talent Ultimate Magician won critical acclaim from both judges and public alike for a show packed with Mandy’s razor-sharp wit, magic tricks and plenty of mind reading. She is at present competing successfully in America’s Got Talent, having reached the semi-finals. 8pm. Tickets £15.
Friday, November 10: The Belgrave House Band presents Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders from Mars. The Belgrave House Band returns to perform their interpretation and celebrate the 50th anniversary of David Bowie’s seminal album, Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. 8pm. Tickets £20.
Saturday, November 11: Gary Stewart’s Graceland. Led by the legendary Leeds-based troubadour Gary Stewart and backed his incredible six-piece band, this spectacular group of musicians come together to recreate Paul Simon’s landmark Graceland album in all its glory. 8pm. Tickets £15.
Friday, November 17: Hilarity Bites – Steve Gribbin: Elon Musk’s Monkey. Steve Gribbin, the sarkily satirical Scouse song-thrush, brings his brand of scathing musical comedy to The Milton Rooms. Up-to-the-second topical and unashamedly political, Steve takes on everything from climate change, royal feuds, the cost of living crisis and the perils of being an embarrassing dad, all with his customary cheeky charm and wit. 8pm. Tickets £10.
Saturday, November 18: Robbie Cavanagh. A welcome back to award-winning singer/songwriter Robbie Cavanagh.This year sees him present his newest body of work, Tough Love, a new studio album recorded live with his band. A self-confessed devotee of ‘real music’, Robbie is not defined by genres - his only rules are good musicians, real instruments, great microphones and performance with emotion; capturing sound, not producing it. 8pm. Tickets £12.
Thursday, November 30: Ryedale Blues Club – DC Blues. York-based DC Blues are coming off the back of a great year. They have shared the bill with the cream of the UK Blues scene with appearances at The Hallelujah Festival, The Great British Rock & Blues Festival for Blues Matters magazine and the O2 Academy in Sheffield for HRH Blues VII. DC Blues have been playing their own take on ‘the blues’ with original material and selected covers since 2012. 8pm. Tickets £10.

Friday, December 1: Bingo ’n’ Crazy! Join the fun at the newest sensation sweeping the nation - Bingo ’n’ Crazy. Hosted by DJ Foster Grant, expect a night of crazy music from the 1960s to present day, flashing lights and crazy stage games for a chance to dance, sing and play your cards right for fabulous prizes.
