Pickering Horticultural Society's Open Show was held at Pickering Memorial Hall. Greatest of thanks are extended to all our helpers, committee members, visitors, judges and exhibitors to make for a great show. It has been an unusual growing year and this was felt by vegetable growers in particular, however there was a fantastic show of dahlias and flowers, with first time entrants winning trophies in some classes. Beautiful interpretations of the Floral Art themes of “Shipwrecked”, “Proud to be Yorkshire” and “Woodland Glade” were on display, but no entries for the novice class, so budding floral arrangers are encouraged to have a go at the November Show.
Handicrafts showed some of the talents on offer in Pickering and the surrounding area, and entries in the cookery and preserves classes left everyone’s mouths watering. A diverse mix of children’s classes showed some real promise for future entries in the main classes.
This was the first show having lost our chairman Stuart Blacklock last year, whose presence was sadly missed by all. We can only hope we made him and the other committee members no longer with us proud.
Entries were down on previous years but there was still stiff competition for prizes and trophies, very kindly given out by Deputy Mayor, Emma Steadman.
The November Show happens on Sunday, November 19 in the Memorial Hall with classes for: Chrysanthemums, Vegetables and Fruit, Flowers and Plants, Cookery and Preserves, Wines and Liqueurs, Handicrafts, Children’s Classes, Floral Art and Photography. Themes for Floral Art are “Au Naturelle” (no flowers) and “Fire and Ice”, and “Small and Beautiful” (Novice Class). Themes for Photography are: “Bonfire Night”, “Autumn at its Best”, “Water, water everywhere” and “Any Subject”, with two for children (under 15s): “My favourite thing” and “On the Beach”.
Helpers for setting up on the evening before and stewards for classes on the day of are welcomed. We are always on the lookout for new committee members to help us run our two shows and Market Stall held every May in the Market Place. If you would like a schedule or to enquire about joining the Society please call the secretary on 07717 493994 or the show contact on 07879 436559.
