A maritime weekend extravaganza featuring some of the region’s best culinary talent and a host of live music is set to return to the North Yorkshire coast.
Scarborough Seafest, now in its 23rd year, will take place from July 14 to 16 on the West Pier, offering visitors live music, cooking demonstrations, food and craft stalls, street entertainment, children’s activities, and a spectacular fireworks display on the Saturday night.
The event will also showcase larger-than-life sea creature characters and feature special appearances from popular fictional pirates Captain Jack Sparrow and Captain Hook.
Attendees can also enjoy swing boat rides, face painting, and on-board tours of the Royal Navy vessel HMS Explorer.
The Scarborough Hospitality Association Food Theatre will host live cooking demonstrations from some of the area’s finest chefs, highlighting the coastal town’s famed seafood.
Councillor Simon Myers, North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for culture, leisure, and housing, said: “Seafest is a unique event that brings together the best of what the coast has to offer.
“As well as highlighting the great seafood Scarborough and its West Pier is famous for, cooked by some of our finest chefs, it is also a showcase for some fabulous musicians.
“It is wonderful to have an event that caters for everyone and I am sure that this year’s event will be the biggest and best Seafest yet.”
The cooking demonstrations in the Scarborough Hospitality Association Food Theatre will feature chefs such as Phil Akrill, head chef at Raithwaite Estate in Sandsend, Dan Hargreaves, head chef and owner of Embers in Scarborough, Martyn Hyde from the Eat Me Café in Scarborough, Rob Clark, head chef and owner of Clark’s Restaurant in Scarborough, Ed Trewhitt, master baker at the Brickyard Academy in Guisborough, and Rob Green, UK Chef Ambassador for Seafish.
The West Pier music and beer marquee will host a variety of musical performances throughout the weekend, with bands such as Follow Deep, Best Served Cold, Stray Scene, Mixtape, The Blackcoats, Billy Neilson, 21st Century Liability, The Hattones, Caleb Murray Band, The White Roses, The Living Young, Soul Rida, Bad Luck Brian, The Woolgatherers, Mark Stanley, Dirty Windows, and Wildfire taking the stage.
Councillor Janet Jefferson, Seafest committee chairman and North Yorkshire Council’s local member for the Castle division, said: “We have put together a packed programme for all the family that celebrates our fishing industry and its heritage, and some of the very best food, drink, musical talent and crafts on the Yorkshire coast."
She also mentioned that the annual Blessing of the Boats ceremony will take place on the Sunday morning.
