The provision of Post Office services in Helmsley is to be discussed by members of North Yorkshire Council next week.

The Thirsk and Malton Area Constituency Committee will discuss the issue with representatives of the Post Office on Friday, June 16.

As reported by the Gazette & Herald at the time, the town's Costcutter, which also offered essential Post Office services, closed in August 2022 without prior warning.

Following months of discussions with the Post Office a retailer had initially been interested in taking on the site, but the Post Office has now confirmed that this is no longer the case.

Helmsley's North Yorkshire representative, Councillor George Jabbour, said: "Since the sudden closure of the Post Office in Helmsley, our local MP Kevin Hollinrake and I have been working hard with all relevant stakeholders to find a solution.

"We are thankful to the community for the phenomenal support that we have received during the campaign to bring postal services back to our thriving market town.

"In addition to the protest, the petition and the media campaign which I organised, I have regularly raised this matter and ensured that the issue was investigated by North Yorkshire Council's Thirsk and Malton Area Constituency Committee.

"As part of its investigation, the Area Constituency Committee will be holding its next meeting in Helmsley where a representative from the Post Office will be there to answer questions.

"I hope that many residents will attend the meeting, which will take place on Friday, 16 June, at 2pm at the North York Moors National Park Authority Committee Room, The Old Vicarage, Bondgate, Helmsley YO62 5BP."
