It’s all yellow at the Milton Rooms in Malton as the music of two legendary acts are featured during a fabulous spring and summer programme.
In addition, there’s something for everyone with a family festival gig, blues, comedy, carnival – and an illuminating insight into the life of a Yorkshire vet, straight from the horse’s mouth!
On May 13, Both Sides Now, a five-piece live band led by the captivating voice of Sarah Miller, celebrate three decades of songs by Joni Mitchell, whose early hits included Big Yellow Taxi. A HEAD full of COLDPLAY arrive on May 20, paying tribute to Chris Martin’s band, whose first top five hit was Yellow. The Coldplay setlist spans all nine studio albums so there is something for both casual and hardcore fans.
Julian Norton, a star of the Channel 5 TV show A Yorkshire Vet, sits down with local author and Country Living columnist Sally Coulthard on June 1 to talk about his TV work, his writing and rural life and there will be the chance to ask questions and a book signing session.
And at the Hilarity Bites Comedy Club on June 30, host Jack Gleadow introduces Danny Posthill and El Baldiniho for an evening of laughs.
Two other events deserve a mention, the family-friendly Deer Shed on Tour gig featuring Carpet and DJ Rory Hoy on the afternoon of May 14, and Brass Castle brewery’s Caribbean Calling event on May 27 during the spring Malton Food Lovers Festival.

The upcoming shows include: May Saturday, May 13: Both Sides Now - The Joni Mitchell Celebration Concert. Both Sides Now are the UK’s only regular touring tribute to the songs of Joni Mitchell. The five-piece live band is led by the amazing voice of Sarah Miller. The Joni Mitchell songbook draws on a three-decade journey of incredible creativity, from folk singer to mainstream rock artist, as well as an abiding love affair with jazz. 8pm. Tickets £16.
Sunday, May 14: Deer Shed on Tour. A family-friendly daytime gig. Noisy Villages aims to bring great new music to rural communities in Ryedale and has teamed up with Deer Shed, one of the UK’s best summer music festivals, for this special event featuring a live performance from singer-songwriter Carpet and a lively DJ set from Rory Hoy. 2pm. Tickets £7 adults, £4 under-18s, £20 family ticket (up to two adults and three children), Saturday, May 20: A HEAD full of COLDPLAY. A tribute to the music and recreating the sound of Coldplay, without being an impersonation of the band. A HEAD full of COLDPLAY capture the feel, energy and themes with a setlist spanning all nine studio albums. 8pm. Tickets £15.
Thursday, May 25: Ryedale Blues Club – Blast Lane. The band take their name from a district of Sheffield and their music is firmly blues-rock and harks back to British bands like Free, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin – lots of chunky riffs, brooding bass and solid drums. 8pm. Tickets £10.
Saturday, May 27: Caribbean Calling – Brass Castle brings Carnival to town. Malton’s own Brass Castle Brewery brings a taste of the Caribbean to the Food Festival with music from Trinidad’s Triniboi Joocie, fresh from a successful run to the semi-finals in the latest series of ITV’s The Voice. Brass Castle will also be serving some of the UK’s best beers alongside carnival rum punch and will have a Trinidadian chef on hand to give everyone a taste of the Caribbean. 6pm. Tickets £10 (including free rum punch for over-18s), under-18s £8.
June Thursday, June 1: A Yorkshire Vet – Julian Norton in conversation with Sally Coulthard. Presented in conjunction with Kemps Books, Julian Norton joins his friend, local author and Country Living columnist Sally Coulthard, for a chat covering his work, his writing, his celebrity status, his TV work and why his latest books are for children. Sally and Julian will go on to talk about their shared interests in nature, farming and rural life, which will be followed by the opportunity for audience questions and then a book signing. 7.30pm. Ticket only £12, ticket only for ages 16 and under £8. Thursday, June 29: Ryedale Blues Club – John Doe Trio. A welcome back to the fantastic John Doe Trio, who have established themselves as one of the most exciting bands on the British blues circuit. 8pm. Tickets £10.
Friday, June 30: Hilarity Bites Comedy Club – host Jack Gleadow plus Danny Posthill and El Baldiniho. Jack Gleadow is a multi-award winning stand-up from Hull, who takes his inspiration from the golden era of variety with the use of sounds, stories, jokes and a scooter. Britain’s Got Talent finalist Danny Posthill offers unbeatable stand up and a range of impressions such as Billy Connolly, Jimmy Carr and Lee Evans to guarantee an unforgettable night of laughter. El Baldiniho is a magician and prop comedian who performs on TV, in comedy clubs, at festivals and at corporate events across the UK and beyond, and was recently seen on Britain’s Got Talent. 8pm. Tickets: £10.

Thursday, July 27: Ryedale Blues Club – The Terraplanes Blues Band. From Bristol, the Terraplanes Blues Band have established themselves as a force on the UK blues scene. Whether covering the songs of their heroes - Leadbelly, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters - or performing their own blistering compositions, the band’s dedication to the Blues gives them an authentic and exciting sound. 8pm. Tickets £10.
September Friday, September 1: Priscilla Queen of the Disaster. Join Susie, a mother of two boys, as she shares her hilarious story of becoming a mum, not knowing what she is doing and how she makes it through each day of parenting two boys with no instructions. Laugh along as Susie realises that parenting is nothing like she expected, highly unpredictable and nobody is getting it right, despite what social media might portray. 7.30pm. Tickets £10.
Saturday, September 9: Mandy Muden – An evening of magic and comedy. Mandy returns to The Milton Rooms with her hilarious comedy magic show. Her sensational appearances on Britain’s Got Talent and the 2022 Britain’s Got Talent Ultimate Magician won critical acclaim from both judges and public alike for a show packed with her razor-sharp wit, magic tricks and plenty of mind-reading. 8pm. Tickets £15.
