A bumper crowd turned out to support Sinnington’s traditional Bank Holiday Monday May Fair.
The sun broke through the clouds occasionally to shine on the visitors and stalls, which were kept busy all afternoon.
Children from the village Primary School entertained everyone with several complicated routines of May Pole dancing, proving that their many hours of practice paid off on the day.
As always, the “Welly Wanging” competition proved a big attraction, with a record 75 people taking part. Only three wellington boots ended up getting thrown by competitors accidentally into the river this year. The coconut shy stall was so popular it ran out of coconuts, which were also the prizes for successful participants.
Just as the show was drawing to a close a rain shower occurred but it didn’t stop the children from enjoying several traditional races on the village green to finish off a very successful event.
Money raised at the Fair contributes to Village Hall running costs as well as supporting a number of village groups and school funds.
Meanwhile, scarecrows from Paddington to Wednesday Adams were on display at Slingsby.
The Slingsby Scarecrow trail organised by Friends of Slingsby School had 23 scarecrow entries this year, the scarecrow with the most votes was Wallace and Gromit, 2nd place was Wednesday Adams and 3rd place Paddington Bear. The lucky winner who completed the trail and entered the prize draw was Millie.
The Monday May Day event was organised by the Slingsby Maypole Committee and featured entertainment from Swinton Training Brass Band, Slingsby School Maypole Dancing, the Clúrachán Folk Band and Minster Stray Dancers.
