A barber shop in Norton has moved next door to expand its offering for customers.

Just Barbering, in Commercial Street, has moved into the unit next door at number 7, previously occupied by lighting store, Theatre of Light.

New business, Nails by Carla Louise, has moved into the barber shop’s old site at number 5.

Since moving a full revamp has been carried out by Just Barbering, with a modern yet classic barber shop feel throughout the shop.

A motorcycle remains in the shop’s window, but there are more fun new additions to be found inside.

These include a darts board and air hockey table.

With the new site, owner Emma-Lea Stone said she aims to have a place where people can come to relax when they are getting a haircut.

“It’s been nice for customers – they can play air hockey and darts,” she said.

Emma-Lea explained how the new features means customers are encouraged to bring their children along, who can play while they wait.

“A lot of people have said it’s a really good idea.

“I just wanted to make it a fun area and not make it too serious.”

The barber has also started to offer women’s hair services, which Emma-Lea said have been “very popular”.

They are carried out in a separate sleek room under the guidance of hairdresser John Noble.

The barber is also to start offering hair replacement services in the coming months on a Monday and Tuesday when the shop is usually closed.

Since renovating, Emma-Lea said: “(It’s been) very busy. Some new people have been in, and regulars have been.

“It’s been nice to have a bit more space - it’s nice to be able to do a variety of different things.”

Emma-Lea opened the store in 2019, and shortly after offered free haircuts to men aiming to return to work.

She told the Gazette & Herald at the time: “I wanted to offer something to my local community that I thought might help to get people back into work.

“A bit of added confidence with a fresh new cut to help them in an interview.”

At the time, the scheme was supported by Cllr Nathan Garbutt Moore, a member of Ryedale District Council.

Just Barbering is open from Wednesday to Saturday, with a late-night service on offer on Thursdays.
