A TRAIN operator in North Yorkshire has warned of the ‘severe disruption’ that this week’s strikes are set to bring.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers union (RMT) are to walk out on March 16, 18, 30 and on April 1.

During the strikes services will be disrupted, and Malton train station will be closed.

There will also be disruption either side of the strike days due to overnight walk outs by staff.

TransPennine Express (TPE), which operates trains from York to cities including Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool, and also to Scarborough, is urging customers to plan ahead.

TPE has said it will only operate a handful of services on each date and is urging customers to avoid travel unless their journey is essential.

Bikes will also not be permitted on TPE trains during the strikes.

Kathryn O’Brien, customer service and operations director for TransPennine Express, said: “This upcoming strike action by RMT will once again have a big impact on rail customers right across our network, and we will only be able to operate a small number of trains across certain routes.”

For those that have to travel on strike days, TPE will be running a reduced timetable on three routes, Huddersfield - York, Manchester Airport - Preston, and Sheffield - Cleethorpes.

TPE has urged those travelling on strike days to checks their journey carefully and allows plenty of extra time as any trains that do run will be very busy, and further disruption is possible.
