A CAR dealer in Malton has shared five top tips to help drivers who are considering a move to an electric car.
Duncan Chapman, retailer principal, at Volvo dealers Ray Chapman Motors Malton, in Seven Street, has given advice to drivers who are considering the switch, and also debunked myths around the topic.
1. Work out what you actually need
Firstly, Duncan said it is important for drivers to work out what they actually need – adding that your car should “fit all aspects of your lifestyle”.
He said size and how the car will be used should be considered carefully.
Duncan added that those with long work commutes will have to ensure the car will have good range.
2. Budget to spend less on maintenance
Secondly, he advised customers to consider that for electric cars, “maintenance is generally much simpler and cheaper than that of a petrol or diesel car”.
He said that, according to EDF Energy in 2022, maintenance costs “could be up to half the price” of petrol or diesel cars because “with fewer parts in an electric car, there is less to go wrong”.
3. Get set up for charging
Thirdly, Duncan said customers should ensure they are familiar with charging.
“It’s worth doing your research and familiarising yourself with the charging process before purchasing, which may include getting a home charging point fitted,” he said.
He added that apps can be downloaded to find charging points across the UK.
4. Know your budget
Fourthly, he advised drivers to know their budget.
“Don’t be put off by the initial upfront cost of an electric vehicle – electric cars tend to cost slightly more to purchase than a petrol or diesel car, but the costs of running are much lower,” he said.
5. Go to see the car in person
Finally, Duncan recommended that customers always view the car in person before buying.
“Whether you’re certain you know what you want, or you’re stuck between a couple of options, it’s a great way to make sure you’re confident in your decision,” he said.
From March 6 to 20, Ray Chapman Motors Malton is inviting buyers to visit the showroom and seek expert advice about purchasing their first electric car.
