A POPULAR café in Malton has been awarded the top hygiene rating by inspectors.

Kingfisher Café, Saville Street, has been handed a five-out-of-five food hygiene rating by the Food Standards Agency.

This rating means that of Ryedale's 145 restaurants, cafes and canteens with ratings, 116 (80 per cent) have ratings of five and none have zero ratings.

Kingfisher Café is a social enterprise, run by Camphill Village Trust.

It provides opportunities and support for people with learning and other disabilities.

Inspectors said that hygienic food handling at the café, which includes preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage, was ‘very good.’

Cleanliness and condition of facilities and building, which includes having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control, was also deemed ‘very good’ by inspectors.

Inspectors found the management of food safety to be ‘good.’

The criteria ensures that systems or checks are in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future.
