York City of Girls Under 13s League
Holme Rovers 1 Old Malton 3
Old Malton travelled to Holme upon Spalding Moor last Saturday aiming for their 7th league victory from 9 games. Holme set up with a deep defensive line and made it difficult for Old Malton to break them down. Old Malton started the game well, passing the ball around the pitch with increased confidence. Holly Culkin and Annie Blades were passing into midfield and starting numerous attacks for the visitors. It took until the 20th minute for the deadlock to be broken. For the third time this season captain Maizie Walker scored direct from a corner to give the visitors a deserved lead. Old Malton created other half chances but the score remained as 1-0 going into the second half.
A quick start to the second half saw Old Malton score 2 more goals to race into a 3-0 lead. Molly Skelton’s strong run from the left , saw her cut in and strike a great right foot shot, in off the far post. Minutes later, Olivia Drew then hit a powerful shot from the edge of the area that was deflected past the Holme goalkeeper. Old Malton were now in full control with Alesha Wright driving the team on with her impressive work-rate. Brooke Worrell was really unlucky not to add a fourth goal on a couple of occasions. With a few minutes remaining Holme were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box. From the resulting free kick Holme pulled a goal back with a good shot that gave Old Malton’s impressive keeper Chloe Smith no chance. Despite the late goal, this was another impressive performance from the visitors.
This victory means Old Malton have now gone top of the league for the first time this season. Coach Nick Drew was delighted with his side’s mature performance and particularly the continued improvement in passing from the team. Next week Old Malton sign off 2022 with a game against Stamford Bridge.
