NORTH YORKSHIRE Fire and Rescue Service has issued advice following a yellow weather warning from the Met Office.
A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued for parts of the UK, including North Yorkshire, with heavy rain and flooding in some areas expected.
Following this warning, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service has issued advice on staying safe during this weather.
A spokesperson for the force said: “Yellow weather warnings are issued for a range of weather situations. Many are issued when it is likely the weather will cause some low level impacts, including some disruption to travel.”
The force said that when driving during yellow weather warnings, drivers should ‘never drive through deep floodwater’ (over 10cm) or past road closed signs.
“Drive slowly through – use first gear and three or four miles per hour is fast enough,” said the force spokesperson.
“Try to drive through the shallowest part of the road – this is usually the middle of the road.
“Test your brakes when you are out of the water, and it is safe to do so.
“Every car is different and while we say 10cm is too deep – some cars may only manage a lot less, this is just an average
“It only takes 30cm of floodwater to move your car and around 60cm for your car to float away
“Driving though any floodwater has the potential to flood your engine and could write off your vehicle.”
