PASSENGERS are being urged to only travel by rail is necessary during a fresh wave of rail strikes that will impact North Yorkshire.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) and the Transport Salaried Staffs Association (TSSA) are walking out again in the long running dispute over jobs, pay and conditions.

Strike action will take place on Saturday, November 5, Monday, November 7, and Wednesday, November 9.

The operators affected included York-based LNER, who run services on the East Coast Mainline to London and Edinburgh, TransPennine Express, whose trains run to cities including Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool, Northern, whose services include the York to Leeds route and CrossCountry, whose services from York run to cities including Birmingham and Bristol.

Malton train station will remain closed during the strikes.

There will be no rail connection between Yorkshire and London on Saturday, with trains destined for the capital only travelling as far as Doncaster.

Very few services will run in and out of Leeds station during the three days of industrial action. It means that Yorkshire’s busiest station will only be open between 7am and 7pm, with the Southern Entrance closed completely.

On Saturday 5, Monday 7 and Wednesday 9 November, no trains will run between:

  • Leeds and Bradford Interchange, Halifax and Hull
  • Sheffield and Manchester to Lincoln
  • Newcastle and Carlisle to Middlesbrough to Hartlepool
  • Scarborough and Hull to York

TransPennine Express will only be running trains between Huddersfield and York on strike days, with the operator adding that anyone planning travel on this route should do so only if their journey is absolutely necessary.

During the strikes Northern will run one train every hour between York and Leeds from 8am to 5pm.

Southbound trains will run from York to Doncaster from 7.30am to 5.30pm.

The operator is yet to publish timetables for November 7 and 9.

Andrew Haines, Network Rail chief executive, said: “A fair and affordable two-year 8 per cent deal, with heavily discounted travel and an improved offer of job security to January 2025, remains on the table and our team have had extensive conversations with RMT representatives around the terms of a deal.”

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: "Our focus in this dispute is the rail employers who have yet to make an offer that will create the conditions for a negotiated settlement.

"I call upon the new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to unshackle the rail industry so they can come to a settlement with RMT.

"We will vigorously pursue our industrial campaign until we achieve a deal."
