TWO teachers have cycled more than 200 miles in one day for a mental health charity.

Charles Gilbank, who is the deputy principal of Birchwood High School in Hertfordshire, and his colleague Thomas William-Powlett, raised more than £1,500 for the Education Support Charity through a sponsored bike ride.

Charles, who is a former pupil of Lady Lumley’s School, took up the challenge of cycling from Pickering to Essex.

Birchwood TLC-Live Cycling, founded by Birchwood High School, was initially set up to improve the physical and mental fitness of the staff at the secondary school.

Although the Birchwood team has completed cycling challenges before, this was the longest ride so far.

It took around 15 hours and 30 minutes, with a cycling time of 13 hours and 30 minutes, to complete the challenge. The pair also averaged approximately 15mph.

“As teachers and educators, we know the pressures that schools are under and lockdown highlighted the need to stay fit and healthy,” said Charles.

“Cycling is a great relief from the pressures of the job.

"Birchwood TLC-Live Cycling is a way to act as positive role models for the 1500 pupils at the school, as well as raising money for charitable causes."

The Education Support Charity is dedicated to the mental health and wellbeing of education staff in schools, colleges and universities in the UK.

The charity was initially established in 1877 as a fund for teachers, but today supports those working in education including support staff, lecturers, administrators and teaching assistants.

It offers a free and confidential helpline which is staffed by qualified counsellors.

Charles added: “We would like to thank all those who have donated and also the local companies that have offered us kit and vehicle support, including TLC-Live, Palmer and Martin Vehicle Hire, Fosters Schoolwear and The Belgian Brewer.”
