A GROUP of fundraisers have devised a fitness challenge to raise funds for the NSPCC and Childline.

The CRoW Challenge involves taking on a 2.5k or 5k route, either by cycling, running or walking it.

It was the brainchild of four members of the Ryedale Fundraising Group of the NSPCC, Wakey Fraser, Susanne Guthrie, Antonia Consett and Harriette Murray Wells and have already raised more than £400.

Wakey Fraser said: “Usual fundraising events have had to be curtailed but we know that the NSPCC and Childline is still there for children when they most need help and support.

“We felt it was important to make sure we, as fundraisers, play our part in raising money for such a worthwhile cause whilst breaking the monotony of lockdown.”

She added: “The beauty of the challenge is that you can decide whether you cycle, run or walk and can undertake whatever distance suits you best. If you are feeling especially fit why not all three! You can fit it into your daily exercise allowance and the best part is knowing that you are bringing relief and light into a child’s life.”

Their support couldn’t come at a more crucial time as despite having to close the night service for the first time and having a 30% drop in volunteer hours, due to counsellors having to self-isolate, Childline is battling to still be there for children across the UK.

The NSPCC, which runs Childline, grows increasingly concerned about the number of children who will experience abuse or neglect due to the impact of Coronavirus, with families struggling with lockdown, job losses and school closures.

Elaine Kaye, the Community Fundraising Manager for Yorkshire & Humberside, said: “I can’t thank Wakey, Susanne, Antonia and Harriette enough, for their commitment and enthusiasm for helping us still be here. It would be just tremendous if more people could sign up and take part or visit the Just Giving page to donate.”

“Sadly, we know that for many children, home isn’t a safe place and they need our Childline counsellors more than ever. This is the greatest challenge we’ve faced in decades and we are calling on the support of the public to help us ensure we can still be here for children.”
