APPLETON-LE-MOORS

Jazz - Jazz on the Moors will take place at the The Moors Inn, from 2pm to 4pm, on Sunday, July 7, in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. On Sunday, July 6, from 2pm until late, the pub will have bands, beer and a barbecue for Macmillan Cancer Support.

BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON

Church - The service at All Saints on Sunday, July 7, will be of Holy Communion at 11am and taken by Rev Tony Lindsay. On Tuesday, July 16, the Bishop of Whitby, Paul Ferguson, will be coming to Brompton to confirm five candidates. This service, which starts at 7pm, is open to all. Refreshments afterwards.

Messy Church - There will be a Messy Church at Hutton Buscel Village Hall on Saturday, July 13, from 4pm to 5.30pm. This is for children, accompanied by an adult, from the whole area. Using the basis of a biblical story the session combines craft activities with tea, song and prayer.

Village Picnic - The community picnic on the Butts on Saturday starts at midday. It is free but there will be ice cream available for a small charge. Bring your own food and something to sit on. There will be children’s activities and a wildflower identification challenge for all. Come along to enjoy some time at this special area. BULMER

Bridge Club - The results of the Bulmer Bridge Club competition held on Thursday, June 27 were 1st Thelma Hardware and Tom Nutman 63.9 per cent; 2nd John and Anne Prest 61.1 per cent.

FARNDALE

Table top sale - There will be a table top sale in Farndale Village Hall, Church Houses, on Saturday, July 6, starting at 2pm. Entry £1 for adults, children free. Refreshments.

GILLAMOOR

Fun day - Gillamoor and Fadmoor Playing Field Fun Day will be held on Sunday, July 14, at the playing field, from 2pm. Activities include a climbing wall, football, mini golf, rounders match, children’s sports and egg throwing. There will also be tombola, a cake stall and raffle. Refreshments available include teas, ice cream, bar and barbecue.

HOVINGHAM

Market - Hovingham Villa Market will be held on Saturday, July 6, from 10.30am to 1.30pm, with more than 60 stalls selling locally-produced foods and crafts. Guest stalls are Christine Addley Chair Seating with reseated chairs in rush, cane and seagrass and small turned items, including mice. Shelley Myers, ladies fashion and accessories. Inside Garden Art selling garden and home accessories, both new and vintage, plus waterproof wall art pictures. Community Stalls include Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and Friends of Slingsby School will be selling ducks for their race on Saturday, July 13, from 11am to 3pm. There is also a chance to buy a minute of the village clock for a £1, with a chance to win £10 and the cafe is being run by Friends of Hovingham School. Josh, the busker will, as usual, be in attendance and the volunteer market manager is Jim Harrow.

HUTTON-LE-HOLE

Quiz - A family pub quiz will be held at the Crown Inn on Sunday, July 7, at 8.30pm. Entry £2, including a sandwich supper. Prize is a voucher to spend at The Crown. It is in aid of St Chad’s Church.

Fete - There will be a fete on Green on Sunday, July 14, at midday. Listen to the band, the Swinton Excelsior Silver band surrounded by the moors, the stream even a great pub and cafes. Usual stalls, games and the duck race at 3pm.

KIRKDALE

St Gregory’s Minster - Until the end of August, St Gregory’s Minster, will again provide volunteer guides in the church on most Saturday and Sunday afternoons to help visitors to appreciate the church and churchyard and its long history.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Bridge club - The result from June 25. North/South winners were Anne Avery and George Goodall with 62.5 per cent, in second place with 57.7 per cent were Gill and Trevor Hardcastle. East/West winners were Tony and Bo Simpson with 64.8 percent, in second place with 55.6 per cent were Clarissa Napier and Chris Brett. There were four small slams bid and made.

Heritage Day - On Saturday, July 20, from 9.30am to 4.30pm. Admission £2 and members will have displays and stories of local characters from Kirkbymoorside, including Ron Todd who had a programme made about “Kirkby’s Kingdom”, the Maw family and the travelling families from Kirby Mills. There will also be a dialect corner where people can learn more about Yorkshire Dialect and North Yorkshire County Archives will be there with their Pop-up Archives. In the evening at the chapel, they are having a special show “Twice Nightly” performed by actor Dominic Goodwin and singer Jessa Liversidge, based on the music hall and variety acts – comics and singers including Kirby’s own Herbert Carter. He was well-known as the Ryedale Humourist and performed in halls and country homes around Ryedale – even on the back of a trailer. Tickets cost £5 each and there will be refreshments during the interval. Doors open at 7pm.

Julian Meeting - This month’s meeting is on Tuesday, July 9, at the Catholic church, from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. Any enquiries to Rev Tania Brosnan.

Tuesday Group - The last meeting before the break for the summer holidays is on Tuesday, July 9, at the Methodist Church Jubilee Room. It will be an evening for a get together for members. The tea hostesses will be Sonja and Daisy. The programme restarts again in the autumn. A thank you to all the guest speakers over the winter/spring sessions.

Menzone - David Bream, from the North Yorkshire National Park Authority, will be the speaker on Monday, July 8, at 7.30pm, in the dining room of the King’s Head Hotel. His title is “On the North York Moors”. New members welcome. First visit is free. Teas and coffees from 7pm and drinks in the bar after 9pm.

Ladies Fellowship - On Wednesday, July 10, the group will be visiting Dorothy’s garden in West Lund Lane at the earlier time of 7pm.

Quiz - Do you enjoy doing quiz sheets? Kirkbymoorside Horticultural Society has a quiz sheet out at the moment. Fifty questions and entries have to be returned by August 23. The Moors Inn at Appleton-le-Moors has donated the prize money. Money raised helps to stage this year’s open show held in the Memorial Hall on September 21 and not as printed on the quiz sheet. Amnesty International - The Kirkbymoorside group will be at Helmsley Walled Garden on Tuesday, July 9, and invite all to join them for coffee from 10.30am to noon. This is the group’s quarterly meeting. On Sunday, July 14, York Amnesty International meet in St Sampson’s Square, from 10.30am to 2pm. Various actions on behalf of Azza Soliman the Egyptian lawyer.

Vehicle show - Many thanks to the businesses who supported the Moorside Club Kirkbymoorside Father’s Day Classic Vehicle Show. These include, The Lemon Tree, The King’s Head Hotel, Something Special, The Moorside Store, Daisy Garden Centre, C W Strickland & Son, Westend DIY and Love My Hair Hair & Beauty. Also many thanks to the committee and club members who donated raffle prizes and their time baking cakes and helping on the day. Thank you also to the vehicle owners and the public who came along. Over £200 was raised for club funds.

Quiz - Four teams playing for £34 took part in Jennie’s Mega Quiz in the Fleece Inn. The winners with 55.5 points were Team @ the Bar + Gary & Rose, second were Honeymooners + Mike & Fiona (52) and third Sue’s Crew (48). The £9 jackpot was won by Sue’s Crew. The winners of Jennie’s Sunday night quiz were Gary, Steve & Co. The jackpot was a rollover.

Coffee morning - All Saints Church monthly coffee morning is on Saturday, July 6, in church, from 9.30am to noon. The club 100 draw will be made. Last month’s winners were Judy Langham and Jean Clarke. All saints summer fair is on Saturday, July 13, from 2pm to 4pm at the Moorside Bar & Club.

LASTINGHAM

Festival - A festival of the Northern Saints will run at St Mary’s Church, Lastingham, from Friday, June 28, to Saturday, August 31. The festival will be launched at 7pm by the Rt Rev Paul Ferguson, Bishop of Whitby, who will be giving an organ recital. A flower festival will also run from June 28, to Wednesday, July 10. The festival will include an exhibition of the story of the Northern Saints, including St Cedd, founder of a monastery at Lastingham, and will offer special events including concerts, recitals, cream teas and workshops. Village fete - The annual Leavening Village Fete is on Sunday, July 7, starting at 2pm, on Leavening Primary School playing field. Games, stalls, teas, cake. Everyone welcome.

OLD MALTON

Ladies Fellowship - The June meeting of St Mary’s Priory Old Malton Ladies Fellowship has taken place.This was the last meeting before the summer break. The speaker was just right for a June meeting, members had Jill Smith from Binnington Blooms. They learnt of Yorkshire country garden flowers and the rise in British flower farming. Jill made up three bunches of beautiful seasonal flowers in assorted colours which she kindly donated to the raffle. Jill can be seen with her flowers at Wykeham on Fridays and in August there is a flower festival. The vote of thanks was given by Ann Shipley. After coffee, members had a business meeting and raffle. The raffle prize was kindly donated by Barbara Thackray and won by Jill Plews. The three flower bunches were won by Sue Galley, Ann Smith and Helen Morgan. The summer outing was discussed. Members meet again in September.

MALTON

Bridge club - John Bramall and Richard Hilton were the winners at Malton Bridge Club on Wednesday, ahead of Tricia Pearce and Beryl Bramall then Sally Beswick and Teresa Belt. The previous week’s session was won by Charlie Callis and Dave Sonley with Gill Oxendale and Sheila Johnson second, Ruth Mattingly and Gladys Thompson third and Ed Robinson and Dave Massey fourth. On the following Sunday, the Malton Cup was won by a team from Sheffield and Leeds, the Malton team comprising Tricia Pearce, Madge Allison, Mike and Annette Jackson finishing in third place.

NORTON

Meeting - Ryedale Parkinson’s Support Group meet in Trinity Methodist Church on Thursday, July 11, at 2pm, when Dr Steve Smith of York University will give his annual report on his research work. Draw - The numbers for the week commencing June 24 for Pickering Town Football Club were 33, 32, 14 and there was no winner so next week’s pot will be £150.

Bridge Club - In the latest session of duplicate bridge on June 27, the winners were Ann Rutter and Joan Taylor with 58.7 per cent. In second place with 55.26 per cent were Terence Boyle and June Greener and in third place Sue Pearson and Gill Hardcastle with 53.95. The winners from June 20 were Madge Allison and Philip Mason with 61.88 per cent, in second place with 58.33 per cent were Graeme Matthew and Anne Avery. In third place Tricia Pearce and Stan Bough with 54.38 per cent.

RILLINGTON

Bingo - £360 was raised for Dementia UK at a prize bingo held in Woodlands Community Centre. The caller was Melvyn Jacques and the checker Sue Nelson. The next prize bingo on July 24 is for the Marie Curie Charity.

RYEDALE

Meeting - Ryedale Carers Support had another successful raffle which raised a fantastic £1,295. Many thanks to Helmsley Walled garden, Dalby Forest, Essential Health and Beauty by Nicola Atkinson, Scampston Walled Garden, Castle Howard, Beck Isle Museum, The Palace Cinema, the Forest & Vale Hotel, North Yorkshire Moors Railway, Ryedale Folk Museum, The Queen’s Head at Amotherby, Flamingo Land and the Wolds Way Lavender. Thanks also to Pickering Co-op who let them sell raffle tickets and to the carers and volunteers who helped make it such a successful event. The lucky winners were Trevor Perrin, Lindsey Wrightson, Helen Goodman, Liz Midgeley, Mary Dickenson, John Howden, Roy Rimmington, Anthea Blackford, Sheila Fisher, Chris Cawley and a number who wished to remain anonymous. Embroiderers’ Guild - Members of the branch met as usual on the last Saturday of the month at the village hall in Snainton. In the morning members worked on their own projects. In the afternoon the speaker was Anne Brookes who is a textile artist. She gave an amusing talk and showed samples of her work, many of which were of dandelions and seed heads. As well as fabric she used paper, wall paper and maps in her pieces before using free machining. Next month members are to attempt a piece of work in the same style.

SEAMER

Church - The preacher at the service was Lorraine Booth, the door steward was Margaret Harris and Bob Jackman was the vestry steward. The organist was Gay Marr. The readings to accompany the address were given by Tina Greenley who read from the first book of Kings, the New Testament lesson was read from Galatians by Mary Jackman and the Gospel reading from Luke was read by Denise Earnshaw. The offering was taken by Margaret Neave. The preacher next week is the Rev Emma Morgan.

SHERBURN

Next Steps coffee morning - Don’t sit at home alone. You are invited to join us at Sherburn Village Hall on Tuesdays, from 9.30am to 11.30pm. Pop in for a brew, cakes and a chat. Social activities provided too. Local free transport is available if needed.

Community Café - The cafe is open in the village hall each Thursday, from 9am to 11.30am. Come and enjoy tea or coffee and a lovely toasted teacake. There are play facilities for the children. All welcome and proceeds are for village hall funds.

St Hilda’s Church - The next service at St Hilda’s is on Sunday, July 14, at 10.30am, led by Barbara Grice.

Methodist News - The Tuesday Coffee morning hostess was Pat Woodley and your kind donations for coffee are still being given to Water Aid. Sunday Worship was led by Tom Clayton. Welcomer was Kim Canterbury, vestry steward Sandra Cade. The Old Testament lesson from the book of Kings was read by Liz Aconley and the lesson from St Luke’s Gospel was read by Jean Brown. Audio visual was by Christine Fenwick. After worship, members enjoyed coffee together in the Hall. Next Sunday at 10.30am the preacher will be Rev Martin Calver and all are welcome.

Open House - Volunteers are only opening the cricket pavilion in Westow on Sunday, July 7, from 10am to 1pm, as there is a private party on Saturday. There will be the usual home baking, hot drinks and bacon rolls. Everyone welcome. All “Stars cricket” will be having an additional morning, from 10am to 11am.

Art Exhibition - The annual Westow Art Exhibition is on Friday, August 16 and Saturday, August 17, and Sunday, August 18, in Westow Cricket Pavilion. Artists who regularly exhibit will be receiving entry forms shortly. WI MEETINGS

Appleton-le-Moors - Members enjoyed a visit from Alison Fisher, chairman of the conservancy committee at NYMA who gave a presentation about the work of the park committees and conservation projects in the National Park. Members greatly enjoyed the presentation which was followed by many questions. Next month, the group welcome’s Pam Thowes of Middlesbrough Little Theatre with her “Vintage Ball Gowns”. All welcome.

Malton - The meeting was opened by secretary Laura Edwards who introduced the guest speaker who gave a taster session in Bollywood dancing. The speaker provided costumes so everyone could feel the part. Birthday cards were passed to members Karen and Josie, also congratulations to the new member Denise who announced her engagement. Helmsley - The coming weeks are going to be busy for member as they seem to have a lot going on. There is a monthly Foodie Group, a visit to Helmsley Fire station, the walk and picnic and, of course, Ryedale Show where members are once again organising the tombola. The guest speaker for the evening was Jeff Andrew’s, otherwise known as the “Man in the Van”. Refreshments were served by Cerise and Vanessa. The competition for an amusing card or postcard was won by Helen Robinson with Joan Garside second and Cerise Smith third.
