Ray King, mayor of Norton, has extended an invitation to everyone in Ryedale to join the fun as Yorkshire’s inaugural Tour sweeps its way through the town on Saturday.
This is possibly the biggest cycle tour staged in Norton since 1869 and events are planned along the route from 11am to 3pm.
The peloton will be entering Norton via Beverley Road at about 1.50pm moving into Mill Street, Commercial Street, Church Street and then turning left into Welham Road at the railway level crossing.
Councillor King said: “We hope that all of Norton and Malton will be there to cheer on the riders. All the big names in cycling will be there, with your chance to see Bradley Wiggins and Marcel Kittel if you missed them in the Tour de France last year.
“There will be something for everyone among all the activities planned for the day.”
Barnies Sarnies is organising Tour de Yorkshire biscuits – in the tour colours of blue and yellow.
There is a big screen in Hyde Park for people to follow the race, with a bouncy castle for the little ones.
At the library and library car park there will be live music, face-painting, a children’s book corner, bouncy castle, refreshments and Eric will make an appearance.
Swinton Brass Band will also be playing. The Union Inn is offering paella and their selection of ales.
Fletchers Butchers is hosting a barbecue and there is a special commemorative ale to quench your thirst at Corks and Cans.
Trinity Church will be home to an exhibition from the Woodhams-Stone Collection detailing the history of cycling along with a Taste of Yorkshire baking and other children’s activities organised by Sue Gough.
Bike hair stencilling is available at Boom Hair Salon.
Coun King said: “As you experience these events don’t miss out on other entertainers on the street. Take a ride on the Spin Cycles outside the swimming baths and then drift across to the Derwent and take in all their activities – face painting, kids’ ride, ice creams, barbecue, Malton White Star Brass Band, refreshments from the Patisserie in Malton and let’s not forget the big screen to catch up on the race itself.”
Also in the run up to the weekend, there will be a shop treasure hunt along Commercial Street/Church Street with a first prize of a family ticket on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
Entry forms are available at most shops.
Coun King said: “As mayor of Norton, I would like to thank all businesses and volunteers for helping to make this a very special celebration for Norton.
“I hope that this is the start of many such exciting community events in the town. I wish everyone a wonderful day.”
