A RYEDALE teenager is on top of the world after winning a gold award for kickboxing.
Andrew Garside, who lives in Rillington, was named the WKC World Champion in the under-65k division at the games in Portugal.
The 16-year-old, who is a five times British Champion, said he was absolutely delighted with his success.
"I had two fights, the first with a Portuguese lad and the second with one from Britain and was really chuffed to win," he added.
"It was a great experience as well."
Andrew, who has recently started an apprenticeship with Micro Metalsmiths in Kirkbymoorside, has been kickboxing for eight years and currently trains with the United Martial Arts College in Malton.
"At first it was something to do as a hobby but then I worked through all the belts and started competing as well," he added.
"I really enjoy kickboxing and hope to carry on training and competing."
The former Norton College pupil was able to share his success with parents David and Ann, along with younger brother, Adam who travelled to Portugal to see him win the World Championship.
David, said they were grateful to everyone who had provided sponsorship.
"Obviously it costs quite a bit to compete in these competitions but Andrew is very dedicated and trains really hard," he added.
"We would like to thank everyone who has supported him - this is real achievement for Andrew and we are very proud of him."
