A UNIQUE mosaic to commemorate the start of the First World War has been created with the help of a young art student.
The Remembrance Mosaic, which will go on display in St Peter's Church in Norton, was designed by 16-year-old Mary Rice a student at Norton College.
Reverend Rachel Hirst, vicar of St Peter's said the idea had started last year when church members were thinking of ways to mark the anniversary.
"We have a number of plaques in the church itself, including one for the Boer War and wanted to do something special to commemorate the start of World War One," she added.
"Mary Rice who is one of church members and does art at Norton College came up with the design including 119 poppies on it to remember the 119 soldiers whose names are on the First World War memorial in the church."
Volunteers helped make up the mosaic which will take its place alongside the other memorials in St Peter's.
"On the day we had a couple who came over from Leeds because their great-uncle was born in the area and his name is on the memorial and so they put together one of the poppies for the mosaic, which was really nice," Rev Hirst said.
"We are so pleased with how it has turned and would like to thank everyone who came along to help. We hope people will come and see the Remembrance Mosaic when it is finished and goes on display in the church."
